The Adventures of the Spiral Team managed to land an interview with The Friendly Necromancer.

For those of you who don't know, the Friendly Necromancer is the Pirate101 Community Manager and an Official Wizard101 Fansite Owner.

Hope you enjoy the interview!

AoS = Black
Friendly = Red

--------------------------------------------------------

1: When did you first know you wanted to work at Kingsisle?

There was a moment about five years ago or so when I first started blogging about Wizard101 that I had a very strange feeling that I would much rather be working at KingsIsle than working at my old job.  I took some time to write up a quick resume, and I sent it in.  It took a lot of patience until I finally saw that small thought through to a reality, but I'm here to tell you that if you hang on to those positive thoughts and work hard, they can come true.

2: How do you like working at Kingsisle?

Now that I'm here I realize exactly how much hard work goes into a never-ending game like Wizard101 or Pirate101, and I love watching it unfold. I like the unique family entertainment twist that makes this company great, and it's been an awesome experience.

3: As Community Manager, what do you do? and do you enjoy it?

I wear several hats as Pirate101's Community Manager!  For one, I'm a central pivot point in the seesaw of communication between Players and Developers.  Pirate101 fans have a lot to talk about and we are listening.  For two, I'm a sort of a safety net for Customer Support, Quality Assurance, and Marketing.  When you govern multiple Social Media platforms, as stated before, you wear several hats.  It can be extremely challenging because, well, Social Media never sleeps.  Finally, it is incredibly fun to be on the sidelines of our community, cheering everyone on as they battle against the Armada.  I love to see players enjoying Pirate101 to its fullest.

4: At a rate of 1 to 10, how hard do you think your job is as community manager? and why?

Out of 1 being a cake job where all you do is breathe and pass paper around to people to 10 being an EMS responder working overtime with people's lives in balance . . . I'd say an 11.  Just kidding, it fluctuates between a 5 and an 8, but if you're well prepared, you'll have a much easier time of things.  The video game industry is notorious for working people in their 20's to life unbalancing extremes, KingsIsle is a fantastic company to work for in that regard.  It not only produces great family entertainment, but it's also concerned with a healthy work environment for those who have families of their own.

5: What's your favorite Storyline of Wizard101/Pirate101 so far?

The Creative writing team does an amazing job, and I've really enjoyed all my time spent in Pirate101.  My current favorite story line is the one found in Aquila. When I was a kid, I think I watched Clash of the Titans about 20 times . . . because of this alone, I'm in love with this particular book of the game.

6:If you could work for both games, what would your role to be?

Well since my boss is going to review this interview before it gets published . . . Marketing Genius III.

7:What's your Favorite and Least Favorite part of your job and Why?

My favorite part of the job is when I make a real (and fun) difference for the players of the game. My least favorite part is when a random piece of information falls through the cracks and players take it personally. There is a lot to keep track of, and we do a bang up job of communicating changes to the game, but we are human, and therefore prone to mistakes from time to time. (hard to believe, right?)

8:How did the Alias; "One Eyed Jack" come about for you on the Message Boards?

Oh sure! When I arrived at KingsIsle, they tried to guide me toward Avery or one of the Trainers (and I doubled as Avery on Twitter during Alpha and Beta until we received our official Pirate101 handle), but in Pirate101 there seemed to be one character who was barely a step ahead of the player while still leading them to their next destination and cashing in on favors left and right. One-Eyed Jack feels mobile and "in the game" vs. Avery who sits in his office. Jack is sly, flawed, and oddly charismatic at the same time, and that made him a natural choice for me . . . he's just a really cool pirate--ultimately found in a tavern at the top of a stitched-together hodgepodge island of old shipwrecks--a guy like that knows a thing or three.

9:Can you take us through a typical day at Kingsisle?

Well, when I first walk in to work, I have to slash my way through the cutthroats to make my way to my desk, which is a physical re-creation of the bar in Flotsam.  Then I begin serving up Yum to young pirates . . . well, ok . . . maybe it isn't that awesome.  ;) Basically the job and task at hand can change from day to day because of all those hats I have to wear, but by the end of the day I've done a good chunk of information gathering and sharing from all over the net about Pirate101, attended a few planning meetings, read an amazing amount of fan fiction, filed away several pieces of fan art and player screenshots, waded through a lot of questions, feedback, requests, and bug reports, and worked side by side with developers, programmers, artists, producers, and you name it as we continue to produce and announce new game updates to Pirate101.

10: What's the one thing you'd like to be added to Pirate101 in the future?

I can't wait to see some Ship vs. Ship PvP and perhaps some new game systems that are completely unique to Pirate101.

Welcome to my second Companion Guide, I hope I can create a whole database of companions on here for you to take a look at and reference to!

This Guide is all about: Subodai.

--------------------

Subodai is exclusive to the Swashbuckler Class and is recruited during the Player Tutorial and is known as a "Starter Companion", his crown shop equivalent is called "Temujin".

Subodai in his Tier 1 form, or "Horse Barbarian".

In his tier 1 form he has some very nice tricks up his sleeves, if you are new to the game, the Epic Talent; "Vengeance Strike" is introduced. Vengeance Strike (Rank 1) allows Subodai to attack an enemy after they have successfully Attacked Him.

Subodai in his Tier 2 form, or "Horse Warrior".

Once Subodai has leveled up to Level 13 he will be available to Promote into his Tier 2 form. His Promotion quest requires him to get in touch with his Ancestors to get his warrior's plume with the help of Madame Vadima, the Witchdoctor Class Trainer.  After speaking to his ancestor "Ogudai" he will need to defeat Cid Simian, a worthy foe who will help Subodai Achieve his Warrior's Plume. After promoting him you can choose 2 Epic Talents from a list of 4. Recommendations and more Details are at the bottom. He also learns the Talent "Buccaneer's Strike" which inflicts 1x Damage and reduces enemy's Agility by 25%.

Subodai in his Tier 3 form, or "Horse Khan"

Subodai's last promotion of the current game (it has been noted on the Official Pirate101 Message Boards that the starter Companions will receive more promotions) at level 47. He informs you that he is ready to achieve "Horse Khan" and to do so, he must seek out a family member in Subata Temple who will direct you on Subodai's Journey towards achieving Khan. After Completing his Promotion you can choose 1 epic talent. He also receives an upgrade to his Buccaneer's Strike Talent; "Buccaneer's Smash".

Subodai's Talent List

Buccaneer Strike ; Available in Subodai's Rank 2 Form

Buccaneer Smash upgrade to Buccaneer Strike; Available in Subodai's Rank 3 Form

Subodai's Epic Talent List

Vengeance Strike Rank 1 - Only Epic Talent Available at Tier 1, Automatically Learnt
Blade Storm - When Subodai Kills an Enemy he can attack another enemy if adjacent to him.
Cheap Shot - If an enemy moves away from Subodai and was near him prior to Moving Subodai can attack him.
Flanking - Bonus Attack when enemy approaches him.
Relentless Rank 1- Chance of Subodai attacking the same enemy again after Successfully attacking him.
Relentless Rank 2 - Same as Relentless Rank 1 but can activate up to 3 times in one round
Vengeance Strike Rank 2 - Same as Vengeance Strike Rank 1 but can activate up to 3 times in one round.
Relentless Rank 3 - Same as Relentless Rank 2 but can hit an enemy when wounded
Vengeance Strike Rank 3 - Same as Vengeance Strike Rank 2 but may stun enemy

Abilities

Accurate - Adds Accuracy to Base Accuracy - Best for Subodai to ensure he hits more
Agile - Adds Agility to Base Agility
Dodgy - Adds Dodge to Base Dodge
Rough - Adds Damage to Base Damage - Best for Subodai to increase Damage, when is that not good?
Strong - Adds Strength to Base Strength - Best for Buccaneer Companions because it boosts there Slashy/Smashy Attacks
Tough - Adds Health to Base Health - Best for all companions, when is it not good to have a little extra health?

Of Course, these are just my recommendations, you can change them to how you prefer to play the game :)

In the comments below, tell me why you like Subodai (if you are Swashbuckler) and/or who is your favourite Companion!

Welcome to my first installment of these series of posts where I will look at companions and show you (in my opinion) how to get the best out of them.

This Post's Companion is: Bonnie Anne

Bonnie Anne has got to be one of my favourite companions, she can pack quite a mighty punch once she reaches her Second/Third Tier. Even before that, if she's utilized in the right way.

Bonnie's First Tier

We first meet bonnie in Skull Mountain, in search of Finn who has stolen Captain Avery's Jade Amulet, and if we are to return it, we will get a very "nice" ship. At first she doesn't seem very lethal, trained in double tap and an extra talent, 25% Unlimited Range Heal and 1x Damage and -25% Dodge. However, more will meet they eye as she "grows" up.

Bonnie Promotes at level 8 and becomes a Fox Sharpshooter, a title fit for her. Her Accuracy Increases slightly and that extra epic you can choose will start her on her journey. I'd recommend Overwatch/Quick Draw with 1x Burstfire, Overwatch if you want her to defend and quick draw if you'd like her to hit (multiple times too) before her attackers, you never know if she's going to kill them.

Tier 3 is when it gets interesting, she promotes at level 31, (the promotion is quest is very fun, especially if you like James Bond lots of easter eggs there). Personally, I think tier 3 is where she hits her lethal stage. Her accuracy , health and damage are significantly better and you definitely see it whilst questing through Tumbleweed/Haunted Skyway. The double Burst Fire is big help too.

Now, this is where things get VERY interesting. At Level 57 (End of MB/Beginning of AQ) she promotes to her highest tier yet, Fox Highlander. The Promotion Quest goes deep into her past and reveals things we never knew about her; She has a Brother: Guy Fox, she's from albion and she used to be part of the Radicals, a group of foxes taking revenge against MB, but she left. After promoting her she automatically learns a new epic, Stock Assault:

and, an awesome new Burst Fire Stat! She can now hit them when they are a wounded! Woot!

Look what snuck it's way into her talent pool, a card version of her Epic Talent! Useful against Musketeer Enemies!

Final Auto-Learn Talent List: Double Tap, Second Wind, Scatterblast, Stock Assault (Card) and Stock Assault (epic)

Recommendations:

Here's what I would suggest for Bonnie Anne: Double Tap, Burst Fire x3 (Oh Yes!) and Overwatch (Privateer has Quick Draw, Both are epic combinations) . Health, Accuracy, Agility and Rough to the max. For Musketeer and Swashbuckler Companions Agility is always the best option because it boosts their Shooty/Stabby Attacks.

Bonnie Anne's Epic Talent List:

  1. Double Tap- Auto Learned when Recruited, Will allow Bonnie to target another enemy after killing another.
  2. Burst Fire - After initially hitting an enemy, Bonnie may hit the same enemy again.
  3. Overwatch - Attack enemy who approaches Bonnie and the Crew.
  4. Quick Draw - Attack before (musketeer) enemy attacks her.
  5. Return Fire - Once a (musketeer) enemy has attacked her she can attack him back.
  6. Double Tap, Rank 2 - Same as Double Tap Rank 1  but can activate up to 3 times in one round.
  7. Burst Fire, Rank 2 - Same as Burst Fire Rank 1 but can activate up to 3 times in one round.
  8. Stock Assualt (Melee Epic) - If she dodges a melee attack she can hit them with her gun (Musketeer's Riposte).
  9. Burst Fire, Rank 3 - Same as Burst Fire Rank 2 but can activate when Enemy has a lower health percentage

Bonnie Anne's Talent List:

  1. Accurate - Adds Accuracy to base Accuracy.
  2. Rough - Adds Damage to base Damage.
  3. Agile - Adds Agility to Base Agility (Best for Bonnie as Agility will boost her damage)
  4. Lucky - Adds Lucky to base Lucky Stats (Magical Damage Resistance)
  5. Tough - Adds Health to base Health.
  6. Spirited - Adds Will to base Will (Will, will help boost her Second Wind Heal)

Bonnie Anne's Power List:

  1. Stock Assualt - (Melee) 1x Damage to one Enemy.
  2. Scatterblast - 1x Damage to Multiple Enemies and -25% Dodge.
  3. Second Wind - + (up to) 25% to an Ally, Unlimited Range.

Let me know what you think of Bonnie in the Comments Below and tell me who you'd like me to analyse next post!

After the recent update to Pirate101, I've had time to finish the main storyline and gather my thoughts on Aquila.

Nova Aquila, the main city of Aquila

Graphics-    I absolutely love the Graphics in Aquila, it's as if KI have transportalated (hehe) us into a Percy Jackson book or back into time to the time of Ancient Greece.
Look at Ithaca, you can see from the temple to my ship without even a blur in sight; beautiful!

"Ducunt Voluntem Fata, Nolentum Trahunt" -
The Fates Lead the Willing and Drag the Unwilling. Latin
I think that looks quite epic, don't ya think?

Ship Fights- I don't know about anybody, else but I am loving the constant ship fights in Aquila against the Ophidians, Vultures and the two new Bosses!  Ship fights are my favourite part about Pirate101, I don't know what it is but whenever I batten down the hatches and my crew take position, I get an adrenaline kick! Ship fights have taken an even bigger step by allowing us to attack multiple enemies at once AND heal/boost our comrades!

I think Mercs 4 Charter's Farming Events just got more interesting!

Companions-  I took my swash through Marleybone and Aquila at first, purely so I could Power Level through the main content (:P),  I got a total of 5 Quest Earnt companions.

Hawkules; Son of Zeus, he will never let you forget who he is! Hawkules is earnt after completing the Labyrinth (My favourite Dungeon!) and boy, does he pack a punch. He's an excellent buccaneer companion and great for taking down those early mobs! His Ego is as big as El Toro's!

Catbeard, Spiral Extraordinaire, he's listed as a Privateer but I count him as a Swashbuckler. He's great for taking down bosses and defending the crew. His Critical Scenes will certainly never fail to make you laugh! *Blows up a Fish*

Lt. Springer, Dog Captain. Um, I'm not too keen on this guy, he's not very good at hitting (even with Accurate Tier 4) he still misses, but he's good to send into the thick of a fight and take all the damage.

Samocles, got him through a Side Quest. He's an excellent right hand man and he's lethal with his sword. Wouldn't bring him into a Boss Fight though, his health's a little too low for my liking...

Ever heard of saving the best till last? Well, I have done exactly that! Gracie is by far the best companion I have ever recruited. Her bomb trap can hit up to 800 damage on multiple enemies, her War Golem Summon is absolutely amazing; Got nice epics, and don't be too sad when it dies, it will blow itself up and inflict damage onto surrounding enemies (but watch out he can get you too!).

Thanks for reading, sorry it was a bit long. I'll do an MB post either tomorrow or Monday! In the meantime, let me know what you think about the recent expansion in the comments below!

Hello, today we have an interview with Kelsey Fireheart, the owner of Stars of the Spiral.

1: When did you start playing Wizard101/Pirate101?

I think it was March 29, 2010.

2:  Stars of the Spiral has been around for a couple years now, How did It start?

I wanted to make a site that had all guides in it. I hated searching. I wanted it at my fingertips. I'm lazy, you know? :P

3: What’s your favourite update to Wizard101/Pirate101 So Far?

Pirate101, the new worlds, hands down. They are just stunningly gorgeuous. Their quests are incredibly funny and definitely worth doing.

Wizard101, I cannot pinpoint one little thing. Azteca was an interesting addition, I liked the wigs! I'm constantly stitchiing and unstitching my hair! And no it doesn't hurt. I also am looking forward to the new tourneys in test being added to live.

4: What’s it like being an Official Fansite for both games?

In one word: Surreal!

5: What would you like added to Wizard101/Pirate101 in the Future?

Wizard101, new worlds, please! I'm about to pop! I'm so curious what happens with Morganthe and what new foe we will face after her.

Pirate101, I think I got my fill for now. I am just waiting for Ship Stitching.. That's my main focus. I'm constantly going "BUT This wheel is soooo pretty, but it's so weak, but no ship stitching, but.. *Cries* too pretty to sell!" :P

7: Finally, is there anything else you’d like to say?

All I gotta say is the Kingisle community in each game is simply amazing. I have to thank each one of you for being here. You all inspire me every day. You all rawk!
